Frequently Asked Questions

  • Life happens! Unexpected surprises come up. To provide space for other clients who may wish to have a session, 48-hours notice is required for any session changes or cancellations. Cancellations made within 48-hours of your appointment are subject to the full session fee.

  • Based on your current health insurance provider or employee benefit plan, services may be covered in full or in part. Please contact your provider to verify whether they cover Registered Clinical Counsellors (RCCs).

After payment of each session, you will be provided with a receipt and your therapists RCC number for your claim.

Unfortunately, at this time, we do not directly bill insurance companies.

  • Payments are currently accepted via credit card and e-transfer.

  • Confidentiality is held to the highest standard at SŌMA Clinical Counselling & Wellness. Confidentially is essential to the effectiveness of the counselling process. Information about counselling session will not be released to anyone without your informed, voluntary, and written consent. There are, however, some exceptions to the duty of confidentiality. The exceptions are:

    • If you or anyone else is at imminent risk of harm

    • If a child or vulnerable adult is at risk or is being abused or neglected

    • If ordered by law in a court of subpoena

    • If you provide written consent allowing confidential information to be shared.

Confidentiality is discussed during your first session and within the informed consent form. Please feel free to discuss further with your therapist.

  • Go to our contact page and submit your contact information through the inquiry form with your available times/days to schedule an initial phone consultation.

  • Your first counselling session is a supportive, non-judgmental space where your therapist’s primary focus is to get to know you and understand your unique experiences. There is no pressure or set agenda. This initial session is about helping you feel comfortable while beginning to explore what has brought you to therapy.

During your first therapy session, we will talk about your current challenges, concerns, and any patterns you may be noticing in your thoughts, emotions, or relationships. We’ll also explore what you hope to gain from counselling, including the personal growth or internal changes you would like to see over time.

You are encouraged to ask questions about the counselling process, therapeutic approaches, or anything else that would help you feel more at ease.

By the end of your first counselling session, we will have a clearer understanding of your goals and begin to outline a direction for your therapy. This may include identifying key areas of focus and discussing a session frequency that best supports your needs and schedule.

  • Fees vary depending on which therapist you see and what type of service you are seeking (couples are charged at a slightly higher rate than individuals). For most counsellors, rates range from $150-$165 per 50-minute session.

  • Many people experience a sense of relief after their very first counselling session, especially when they feel heard and understood. As therapy continues, these benefits often build over time, leading to deeper and more meaningful change.

Typically most clients require a minimum of 10-12 sessions and can range upwards.

  • As you begin to explore the deeper layers of your experiences and relationships, emotions that may have been pushed aside or difficult to access can start to emerge. These feelings can sometimes feel intense, unfamiliar, or unsettling.

While this can be challenging, it is also an important part of the healing process. Making space for these emotions allows them to be understood, processed, and integrated in a way that supports meaningful and lasting change.

Your therapist will work closely with you to ensure this exploration feels contained, supportive, and attuned to your capacity, so you can move forward with a greater sense of clarity and stability.

  • At times, unexpected challenges or crises may arise between sessions that feel difficult to manage on your own. In these situations, brief phone support may be available, depending on your counsellor’s availability. Any between-session calls are billed on a prorated, per-minute basis.

To protect your privacy and ensure you receive the best possible support, we ask that email communication be limited to scheduling and administrative matters. Sensitive or personal concerns are best explored during your sessions, where your counsellor can fully support you.
